HISTORY
The hospital was founded in 1899 by Jósa András. He was not only the director of the hospital in Nagykálló but he was an archaeologist and a journalist too. Andras was 26 when he started his medical education in Vienna and after completing his medical education he devoted his life to medical sciences and to the improving the regions underdeveloped public health services.
The name of the hospital was Erzsébet Public Hospital. Within 16 years it became a famous hospital with 260 beds. During the following years more and more patients wanted to be treated in this hospital and it resulted that the hospital became so very congested that it was not unusual that two or three patients used the same bed at the same time. This was the reason that new wings were added to the original building. Before the World War II in the departments of Casualty and Surgery, Internal Medicine, Dermatology, Ophthalmology Maternity Ward, and Paediatrics there were 600 beds for patients.
In 1967 together with the TB Clinic in Sóstó and with the Out-patient Clinic the complex hospital and clinic took the name of its founder Jósa András.
The hospital is still developing. New buildings are being built and today the hospital with its 1869 beds is one of the biggest hospitals in the country with 31 clinical and 4 diagnostic wards to serve in the recovery of the patients.
